Alexander Gustafsson just had another classic 5 round battle for the belt. This time, with American Daniel Cormier in Houston, where he the Mauler surprised the Olympian with wrestling of his own, scoring takedowns early. The Swede nearly stopped DC in the third with a huge knee that rocked the champ in this 25 minute war.

In the end, it was Cormier’s name called out. 47-48, 48-47, 49-46 read the scorecards, where just one round separated the Allstars Training Center fighter from the belt.

The fight started out like many fans had expected, as Cormier used his wrestling to pick up and slam Gustafsson. The American stayed on top, using ground and pound to win the first round clearly.

However, the tide changed as Gustafsson showed that he had a double leg of his own, and used it in the second round to score points on Cormier.

The last rounds saw both fighters bloodied and tired, with DC using inside punches to impress the judges. Gustafsson now moves to (16-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) and Cormier (17-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) after the Toyota Center in Houston battle.

No belt for the Swede to take home, but another showing that whether it is champion Jon Jones or Daniel Cormier at the top, Gustafsson is not far behind.

What a warrior! @alexthemauler #UFC192 #AlexanderGustafsson
